Registered domain names crossed 225 million
The number of registered domain names on world wide has crossed more than 225 million, said by Verisign an US based IT company today.
In a Domain Name Industry Brief published by Verisign said that ” Nearly six million domain names were registered to the Internet in the fourth quarter of 2011, bringing the total number of registered domain names to more than 225 million worldwide across all domains,”
Among the over all registered domains ‘.com’ and ‘.net’ which are called Top Level Domains (TLDs) experienced a massive growth in the fourth quarter of 2011, reaching a combined total of 113.8 million names, the report said. This statistics represents nearly 2 percent increase in the base over the third quarter of 2011 and nearly 8 percent increase over the same quarter in 2010,” it said.
The registration of new .com and .net totaled up to 7.9 million during the quarter representing 4 percent rise year-over-year in new registrations.
According to the report, the renewal rate of old website for the fourth quarter of 2011 for ‘.com’ and ‘.net’ reaching 73.5 percent from 73.3 percent in the third quarter.This report may affect the Existing rules of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). At present there are only 22 TDLs are their, but brands and businesses currently have the opportunity to apply for any domain name that they choose.
