How to enter single user mode in linux with screenshots.

In this post i have explained how to enter in to single user mode in Redhat / Centos / Fedora Linux with screen shots. If we lost or forgot root password the first and best way to reset the root password is single user mode. In this blog i have explained how to enter in to single user mode. I have used Redhat linux for this example but this method is common for CentOS and Fedora also.

 

How to enter single user mode in linux with screenshots.

 

Step 1:

At the time of Linux OS boots it will ask you for “Press any key to enter the menu”. At the time press any arrow key.

Step 2:

Navigate to your desire kernel using arrow button in keyboard and press “e” to edit.

Step 3:

After you press “e” on a kernel the below screen will be displayed.

Step 4:

Use arrow key in keyboard and go to 3rd line and press “e” to edit. Then go the end of line press “space bar”  forward by number “1” and press enter. The 1 is representing single user mode.

Step 5:

Press “b” to boot to the single user mode

Step 6:

Step 7:

Now you are in the single user mode. Reset your password using password command or follow steps in User and Group Administration .
